Aesthetically Pleasing Jet Blast Deflector
Airport safety comes in a variety of forms, from the implementation of best practices to enforcement of rules and regulations, and even the installation of a jet blast deflector. During the planning phase of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Concourse T North Extension Project (say that five times fast) individuals noticed a need for the protection of vehicles on a major roadway leaving the main terminal building.
The Challenge: How to protect passing vehicles near aircraft engine blast getting ready to taxi?
The Solution: Install a 14 ft. tall x 156 ft. long jet blast deflector that is aesthetically pleasing.
Airport planning staff noticing this safety concern in the early planning stages were critical for future project budgeting and scheduling. The proximity of aircraft positioning was evident there would be jet blast concerns. Aircraft types and jet engine velocities were evaluated in key locations to determine what type and size of jet blast deflector would be needed. The installation location was critically important to be within an acceptable distance from the perimeter security fence. Looking at all angles of this project, airport staff and consultants realized the back of the structure would be easily visible from the road and not very appealing to the eye. As a result, the decision was made to add an exterior cladding making the view aesthetically pleasing.

BDI was awarded the project under a joint venture with C.W. Matthews Contracting Co., Inc., and Technique Concrete Construction to supply and supervise the installation. The project was completed early August 2022.
