A railway running directly behind recently-extended Runway 22 required protection from departing Beluga XL aircraft. Prior to installing the deflector, BDI undertook extensive simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design. This study was reviewed by the local planning authority and National Rail as part of obtaining planning permissions. The result is an orange and white deflector with a number of unique aerodynamic features to create a safe environment behind the runway. Learn more about BDI’s CFD services.
