NAS Whidbey Island Jet Blast Deflector

Refurbishment of F/A-18 Jet Blast Deflector

Project Details

Location: Naval Air Station Whidbey Island
Washington, USA
Project: Power Check Pad Overhaul
Owner: U.S. Navy
Challenges:
  • Coordination of ongoing airside operations
  • Tight conformance to applicable regulations
  • Structure needed to be rated for high temperatures (78°F/415°C)

The US Navy widely uses BDI’s GS-Series blast deflectors for unabated power check pads. These deflectors can withstand the extreme temperatures and velocities of this application. After many years of service, these deflectors may require maintenance and recertification. For this project, BDI refurbished and recertified the deflector, which involved a full power afterburner test with a F/A-18 aircraft.
