BBTCA Ground Run-up Facility

Toronto City Center Quieter Thanks to New GRE

Project Details

Location: Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport
Toronto, Canada
Project: BBTCA Airfield Rehabilitation Program, GRE
Contractor: Pave-Al Limited
Owner: PortsToronto
Challenges:
  • Cold-weather anchor installation
  • Tight conformance to applicable regulations
  • Challenging aerodynamics

When PortsToronto required a solution to reduce the acoustic impact of ground run-ups, they turned to BDI. This facility allows Q400 aircraft to self-maneuver into position by performing a minimum-radius turn inside the facility. Once in position, the 14-meter tall acoustic walls effectively block the transmission of run-up noise from disrupting the nearby downtown Toronto community. BDI’s Verti-vent design with Stabile-Flow technology allow usability in virtually all wind conditions.
