DESIGN SUPPORT FOR ADVANCED AIR MOBILITY (AAM)
BDI’s team is at the forefront in Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) solutions for vertiport / heliport design and eVTOL testing. As the aviation industry evolves, and accessible urban air transportation becomes more of a reality, BDI makes safety a high priority.
Protective designs and materials may play an important role when it comes to downwash and the testing of motor concepts during various weather and wind conditions. Our engineers can examine airflow through the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for particular applications and thrust impacts to various structures, vehicles, equipment or people. Safety is the main priority. Proper advanced planning saves both time and money.

“We sincerely appreciate the outstanding support from Blast Deflectors, Inc. You have obviously earned your reputation over the last 50+ years of service.“
“I walked the entire depth of the parking lot behind the blast fence and there was no significant turbulence even with the engines at full power.”
Ground Testing:
Being a “friendly neighbor” to the community and other operators creates a pleasant work environment and positive impression. Noise from helicopters or eVTOLs (as quiet as they already are) can be a nuisance to others. BDI can assist in identifying noise attenuating solutions for vertiports or testing facilities.
Our team will work with you on uniquely designed testing facilities, protective blast barriers, or noise attenuation walls for a variety of challenges.
Airflow Analysis:
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) consulting projects can involve the examination of operating eVTOL or helicopter aircraft to solve and analyze downwash impacts involving fluid airflow dynamics. CFD modeling techniques uses high-fidelity, three-dimensional CAD models of site configurations representing an accurate portrayal of what’s to be expected in an area and how to identify potential impacts and possible solutions.

Vertiport / Heliport Design:
Safety and security are the utmost priority for any airport or vertiport. Regulations and policies are established specifically for these reasons. Being proactive in design and construction for vertiports and helipads can save both time and money through the implementation of specific safety features. With each project being unique in their own way, BDI can recommend solutions to properly protect infrastructure and pedestrians.
Downwash protection from aircraft operations has the potential to cause significant damage to surrounding structures and equipment or injury to people. Maximum wind velocities acceptable to operational areas range between 31 mph (50 km/h) to 50 mph (80 km/h) but could still inflict harm or damage.
Vertiport / heliport operations, at any location, will include the takeoff and landing of eVTOL / helicopters, pedestrians moving to and from loading zones, employees working in the operating area, and use of a variety of equipment. The proximity of advanced air mobility operations to users should consider implementing specific safety features.
BDI has the resources and expertise to assist in evaluating solutions and providing recommendations for vertiports / heliports.
